Step-by-Step Guide to Making Handmade Paper

Step 1: Preparing Your Paper Pulp

What You Need: Old newspapers, delivery bags, used notebooks, rough paper.

1. Tear the old paper into small pieces (about 1-inch squares) and place them in the tray.
2. Add warm water to fully soak the paper and leave it for 2-4 hours (or overnight for best results).
3. Once softened, blend the soaked paper using a hand blender or mixer, adding a little water at a time until you achieve a smooth, porridge-like consistency.

Try This: Add poster colors to your pulp for beautiful colored paper. Mix well!

Step 2: Setting Up Your Papermaking Station

You'll Need: The big tray, mould and deckle, and water.

1. Fill the big tray with water (about halfway).

2. Pour the prepared pulp mixture into the tray and stir it well.

Perfect Paper: The thicker the pulp in the tray, the thicker your paper will be!

Step 3: Creating Unique Textures (Optional Enhancements!)

Get Creative With: Dried flower petals, cut-up stitching thread, seeds, leaves, or fabric scraps.

1. Mix in your chosen decorative elements into the pulp.
2. For seed paper, stir in basil seeds at this stage (do not blend them!).
3. Stir the mixture well, making sure the added elements are evenly distributed.

Experiment: Try different materials for textured, eco-friendly designs!

Step 4: Forming Your Paper Sheet

Let’s Get Hands-On!

1. Hold the mould and deckle at an angle and dip it into the tray, scooping up some pulp.
2. Shake it gently side to side underwater to spread the pulp evenly.
3. Slowly lift it out and let the water drain (hold steady!).
4. Leave it for a minute so the pulp settles and bonds.

Pro Tip: Want thicker paper? Scoop up more pulp. Prefer thin paper? Use less pulp!

Step 5: Removing Excess Water

Time to Dry Your Paper!
1. Place the mould on the cloth provided.
2. Use the sponge to press gently, soaking up excess water.
3. Carefully remove the deckle (outer frame), leaving just the wet pulp on the mesh.

Handle With Care: Be gentle while pressing—this keeps the paper smooth!

Step 6: Transferring & Drying Your Handmade Paper

1. Flip the mould (paper side down) onto a dry cloth.
2. Tap gently or lift the mesh carefully so the paper transfers.
3. Place another cloth on top and press lightly to remove excess moisture.
4. Leave it to air dry for 24-48 hours in a well-ventilated space.
5. Once fully dry, peel the paper carefully from the cloth.
6. If the paper curls or has creases, place it under some heavy books overnight to flatten it.

Faster Drying? Place near sunlight or a fan, but avoid direct heat to prevent curling.
