Can you really turn last week's newspaper into a sheet of paper pretty enough for a Diwali card? Yes. You need three things: waste paper, water, and a mould and deckle. A proper handmade paper making kit in India bundles the hard part, the tools, so you can be sloshing pulp around the day the box lands. Here's exactly what goes into ours, how the process works, and which version to pick.
What's inside our DIY handmade paper kit?
The Kitsters DIY handmade paper kit is built around one honest idea: the best handmade paper starts as somebody's rubbish. Old newspapers, scrap printer sheets, used notebook pages. You tear them, turn them into pulp, and the kit does the rest.
The heart of the box is the mould and deckle, the frame pair that shapes each sheet. Alongside it, you get materials to personalise your paper: petals, threads, and natural dyes for colour. Every sheet comes out shaped by your hands and embedded with whatever you chose to drop in. No two are ever alike, which is the whole point.

How to make handmade paper at home in India
The process is old, simple, and quietly meditative. First, tear your waste paper into small pieces. Newspaper gives pulp with a soft grey-blue tone, plain white sheets give a paler one, and mixing them is how you learn what you like.
Soak the pieces in water until they break down into pulp. A large tray that fits the mould and deckle is the only other setup you need, plus water. Scoop the pulp up through the frame: the mesh screen in the mould catches the fibres, and the deckle on top shapes the edges and gives them that soft, organic border people pay good money for.
Press the water out, press the sheet onto something to catch it, and this is where the kit earns its keep. Scatter in a few petals. Lay a thread. Add a drop of natural dye. Then patience: leave it to dry fully before you write on it. That's the honest rhythm of it. Half an hour of happy work, then waiting, then a stack of sheets nobody else on earth owns.

What do you actually do with homemade paper?
More than you'd think. Greeting cards and personalised stationery are the obvious first stops. Gift wrapping a small present in homemade paper with a pressed petal on top beats any ribbon. Artists use the sheets as textured paper for painting and prints, and journals made from your own pages make excellent gifts for people who have everything.
If recycled paper art is the itch you're scratching, this is the gateway: your sheets become the raw material for everything else you make. Want to go further? Our combo with the gel plate monoprinting kit turns your homemade paper into one-of-a-kind bookmarks, cards, and wall art.
The honest bit: who this craft is not for
Water is involved, so there will be splashes. Sheets come out slightly wonky, with deckled edges and their own texture, never mill-perfect. If you want uniform results, this will annoy you. If you want a slow, screen-free hour and a box of sheets with real personality in it, that wonkiness is exactly why you'll love it. Works beautifully with chai and a friend on a Sunday.
Prefer to start with just the tools?
Some of you already have a drawer full of paper scraps and only need the gear. The standalone mould and deckle set is a solid wooden mould with a mesh screen, plus the deckle frame for shaping edges. Same sheets, same organic borders, none of the personalising extras. If you've already made a batch and want a second setup, or you'd rather add your own petals and dyes, this is your box. But if this is your very first paper making kit, we'd point you at the full set, because the petals, threads, and dyes are half the fun.

Make a whole weekend of it: two combos worth a look
The combo with our DIY solar printing kit pairs pulp pressing with sun-powered printing, and needs zero crafting skills to start. Pulp, press, expose, and print, a genuinely slow and satisfying plan for a weekend in with friends or a date night that isn't another dinner.
Or go the printmaker's route with the gel plate monoprinting combo, a blend of sustainability and creativity for solo art days or crafty get-togethers. Both pair two crafts that feed each other, since whatever you make on the gel plate deserves proper handmade paper underneath it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use any waste paper to make handmade paper?
Newspapers, scrap printer sheets, and old notebook pages all work well, and they're exactly what this kit is designed for. Glossy magazine pages can behave differently, so start with plain paper and experiment once you understand how your pulp sets. Your first few sheets teach you everything.
What is a mould and deckle in paper making?
It's the two-part tool behind every sheet. The mould is a wooden frame holding a fine mesh screen that catches the paper pulp from your tray. The deckle is an open frame that sits on top, shaping the sheet and giving it soft, organic edges. Both come in the full kit and on their own.
Is making paper at home messy?
There's water involved, so expect some splashing and a wet patch on the table at minimum. Most of the action stays inside the tray, and one towel handles the rest. Setting up near a sink or on a balcony keeps the whole thing contained and easy to clear away.
What can I use finished handmade paper for?
Greeting cards, journaling, personalised stationery, art paper, and gift wrapping are the classics. Each sheet carries its own texture and deckled edges, so even plain ones look considered. Press petals or threads into the pulp and you have a card that needs no extra decoration at all.
Once your first batch dries, you'll start looking at every envelope and note as a canvas. Browse the full range of DIY kits to find your next slow, satisfying project.
