The family WhatsApp group is already at it. Mum has vetoed dry fruit. Your sister wants 'something different'. And every list of Diwali gift ideas for family in India you open seems to recommend the same scented candle in a slightly different jar.
So here's our 2026 edit, built on one rule: gift an evening, not an object. Everything below is a kit we make at Kitsters in Mumbai. You give the activity. The finished piece is the bonus, and the mess is half the fun.
What do you gift a family that has everything?
Something they can do together, not dust. A kit buys you an evening with phones face down, chai going cold, everyone arguing about technique. That is rarer than any gadget.
On gadgets: we know 'diwali gift ideas for family electronics' is a big search right now. Honest take from a studio full of craft supplies? Most electronics end up in a drawer by February. The only machine we will happily defend gifting is one that spins sugar. More below.
Our own test for Diwali gift ideas to family is simple. Will the kit get opened on the night, or saved for a cupboard? If your family measures love in cash envelopes, you know your people.
Our 2026 Diwali gift ideas for family, person by person
Different people want very different things, so here is the match-up. This covers Diwali gift ideas for friends and family gatherings alike, from the relatives who plan everything to the ones who insist they need nothing.
Diwali gift ideas for parents
The DIY Diya Decoration Kit (₹649) is our pick. It's a calm, sit-down activity, and parents who claim they need nothing rarely turn down a chance to paint. Paints and rhinestones come in the box, so they can go traditional, try mandala-inspired patterns, or keep it minimalist. Best part: the diyas they paint get lit on Diwali night, and every flame after that is quietly you.

For your siblings and cousins
The DIY Floral Glow Jar Kit (₹1,799) turns an ordinary bottle into a glowing floral night lamp. Think soft light, delicate florals, and the exact Pinterest-style décor your cousin keeps saving but never buys. It reads as a keepsake, not clutter, which matters when the recipient has strong opinions about their room.

Diwali gift ideas for family under 500
The safest Diwali gifts for family members get used the same night they are unwrapped. Under ₹500, the honest answer is one excellent deck of cards. Kitsters Playing Cards (₹399) fits the band, needs no shelf space, and arrives with a built-in plan: the first game is on you.
This is also where Diwali gift ideas for family under 1000 open up: add the DIY Diya Decoration Kit at ₹649. Cards for the night, diyas for the window. Two gifts, one sensible spend, and it looks like you thought about it.
Build your own Diwali gift hamper for family
Most ready-made Diwali gift hampers for family in India are beautiful packaging around a handful of biscuits. Build your own instead, jugaad style. Pick a theme, add two or three kits, tie it with ribbon. Done in ten minutes, and nobody re-gifts a hamper they watched you assemble.
A quiet-Diwali hamper: diya kit plus glow jar, ₹2,448 together. Prefer a game-night hamper? Cards plus cotton candy, ₹3,398. Hunting Diwali gift ideas for neighbours? One diya kit each at ₹649 is generous without being showy.
Hosting this year? These double as Diwali return gifts for family. Send everyone home with a deck of cards, or with the diya they painted that evening. Far better than a silver-plated something that lives in a cupboard till it tarnishes.
Diwali gift questions, answered
What are good Diwali gifts for family under ₹1,000?
Two of our kits sit under ₹1,000. Kitsters Playing Cards cost ₹399 and get used the same evening they are unwrapped. The DIY Diya Decoration Kit is ₹649 and leaves you with painted diyas to light through the festival. Buy both and you have a night of making plus a night of playing, still under budget.
What should I put in a Diwali gift hamper for family?
Pick one activity and one thing to use straight away, then add a third kit if budget allows. A diya kit with a deck of cards is a solid base. For a bigger hamper, add the cotton candy kit so the whole household shares one gift. Wrap it yourself; half the charm is that it isn't off a shelf.
Are DIY kits good Diwali gifts?
Yes, when the person enjoys making things or complains there is nothing to do on festival evenings. A kit gives them an activity, a finished piece, and a story. The trade-off: they have to make it themselves, so skip it for relatives who genuinely prefer receiving to doing.
What can I gift neighbours for Diwali?
The DIY Diya Decoration Kit at ₹649 is an easy choice for neighbours. It's festive, light to carry when you are making the rounds, and works if they paint the diyas or simply display them. For neighbours who host card games, a ₹399 deck of playing cards is just as welcome.
Diwali lands on 8 November 2026, which is closer than it feels. Browse the full range in our shop-all DIY kits collection, pick a kit per person, and let the family fight over the first cone of candy floss.
